Saving Money on Rustic Furniture
Buying new furniture can be a daunting prospect, from both a design standpoint and a financial standpoint. The financial challenges are obvious: furniture is very often expensive, particularly if you are trying to work the furniture into a specific theme, as it will mean you will have limited flexibility. Without a theme, you can shop around for the best deals across the board. Your theme, however, forces you to take what you can get, and if what you can get is expensive, well then you are simply out of luck. From the design side of things, a theme can be a huge advantage, though. For instance, if you want to go with rustic furniture, then many of your design choices can simply fall into place for you. So, how can you work within the theme of rustic furniture and not have to drive yourself into debt to do it?
Well, first of all, you can try bargain hunting. As pointed out above, this may be a bit difficult to do if you want to stay within the theme of rustic furniture, but it is certainly worth the effort to try. You may also want to check out garage sales, yard sales, and flea markets for some good deals on furniture that might fit into your theme. Your results from these types of sales will most likely be inconsistent. Some times you will not find anything useful, but in some cases you will come away with a great piece to add to your design.
Similarly, the Internet is an excellent place to find rustic furniture. There are numerous web sites that are dedicated solely to rustic furniture, and many others that deal in all types of furniture and will have some sections with pieces in your theme. The diversity of these sites can allow you to shop around for good deals as well, although shipping on larger items can be a pain when going a long distance.
Another great way to save money on rustic furniture is to rework existing pieces of furniture to fit into your theme. For instance, a wooden table that has been painted previously can be easily re-fit. The first thing you will need to do is to strip away the paint to expose the natural wood. Wood, of course, is at the center of the rustic theme, so you will want to have it visible.
Now, if the wood is naturally the color you want it to be (which means you are quite fortunate) all you will have to do is put some type of varnish on it which will keep it protected. If, however, the color does not match the décor of the space you will be putting it in, you will need to first stain the wood. When choosing a stain for rustic furniture, you will want to stick with rich, dark colors for the most part. Sometimes lighter woods can be used as well, but the darker colors are more common in rustic themes, which means you will more easily be able to find matching pieces.
