Building Rustic Fences

The fence seems to be the most important element of the New World as it represents an often-subconscious survival and security element. There are different types of fences: ranging from simple ones designed to deter animals from going out to the more complicated worm fence and others. Building rustic fences is not a difficult activity, but it requires force, skillfulness and practical thinking.

In the old times of the 17th 18th century even a "national fence" was known. Building this type of rustic fence required more strength than any other type of fence and they were used to enclosure pasture using a special joint technique, but it ended up losing its functionality by the end of the 19th century.

Building some other types of rustic fences require mortised rail sockets and well-set posts no matter how low or high the fence is. But a simple rustic fence may not require so much time and money, particularly when developed into a hobby or a pleasant time to spend with your family. The yard in front of your house may need a low rustic fence to define the playing space and the other territories. You can also gain a point of interest by building a rustic fence in your yard, delimiting different areas, especially the garden. In this way, you may even enhance privacy of your little domain, setting it apart from the street.

Building a rustic fence requires you to establish whether or not this type of fence is suitable for your house and its style, as the rustic fence fits well with houses in a rustic style or with cottages with great gardens. In a certain way, the rustic fence is more like a space definer than a protection or survival element as in the old times. This type of fence may not be suitable for those who desire a visual barrier for their house and garden.

For those who are very much into DIY, building a rustic fence may seem a joke, although the most difficult part is digging the hole for the posts. The rest may be easy for those who love do-it-yourself projects. There are different stages in building rustic fences and the first is concerned with preparing the ground: basically clearing it of plants or other obstacles, marking the place for the posts and digging holes for them.

The other stage is actually building the fence, using tree trunks or other materials, selecting the shorter pieces for the posts and the others for the horizontal elements. You may arrange the posts in X-shape or choose another position or model for the rustic fence. Filling the holes with concrete is generally not difficult, nor is running the horizontal planks between the posts.   And finally, consider adding some decorative touches for completion when building rustic fences, such as stains or for the truly daring, wood-carved images.
